A dinner held at Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan celebrated the appointment of Department of Urology Chair James M. McKiernan, M.D., as the John K. Lattimer Professor of Urology. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. McKiernan is a nationally recognized leader in state-of-the-art surgical therapies for bladder, kidney, prostate, and testicular cancers. For the past 10 years, Dr. McKiernan has directed a research team at the Medical Center investigating quality outcomes and effectiveness in urologic cancer surgery.

The intimate dinner was hosted by Lee Goldman, M.D., Harold and Margaret Hatch Professor, Executive Vice President and Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine, and Chief Executive of Columbia University Medical Center. In his remarks, Dr. Goldman paid tribute to Dr. McKiernan’s work as an accomplished researcher and compassionate clinician and his continuation of the remarkable legacy of John K. Lattimer, M.D., a pioneering urologist who chaired the Department of Urology at Columbia from 1955 to 1980. The John K. Lattimer professorship was established in 1975 by grateful patients of Dr. Lattimer, who was also a ballistics expert and known collector of historical relics. Joining in the celebration were Dr. McKiernan’s family, Department of Urology benefactors, and relatives and friends of Dr. Lattimer.
